Weather confusion.
Has it happened to you or your family?
It was our annual Central Oregon summer trip and we were swimming in the pool with blue skies overhead. That’s when our 5 year old said, “Daddy, when do we go home to Oregon?” I said, “We’re in Oregon. Where do you think we are?”
“We’re in California because it’s so sunny and hot and we are in the pool.”
I laughed out loud and told him I could see his point! A case of weather confusion, as in, there’s no way this is Oregon!
I pointed to the mountains (the Cascades) in the distance and told him that’s usually the dividing line between rainy or cloudy and warm and sunny.
And that lots of times the mountains stop those clouds and cool ocean air. Which is why at 2pm on Sunday July 22, 2012 it was 66 in Portland (and cloudy) and 86 in Redmond, Oregon, a bit north of Bend.
This is how the Satellite picture looked at the time. The white? Clouds blanketing western Oregon & western Washington. The black and kind of grayish areas? Where it is clear and the sun’s shining bright.
This is where I say…weather confusion…it can be a beautiful thing. And I hope it happens to you this summer!

Well I can understand why he thinks that way. It was only 48 degrees out here in east Gresham(Oregon).I was Cold all night last night. Brrrrrrrr!

Seriously–it’s been fall-like around here instead of summer-like! Thanks for the comment.

Bob–we were at Brasada Ranch on vacation–practically your backyard. Yeah, your trees just don’t get ‘watered’ as much, so even the ones you have are smaller. If we could merge east and west sides I guess we’d really have it made! Thanks so much for taking time to post here on the blog and enjoy that sunshine!

Oh, my weather confusion always works in the reverse. Having grown up in the Midwest, I usually can’t believe that it’s summer here when it’s so dark and cool!

Ha-ha…great point. Funny and true at the same time. I went to school in Missouri so I know exactly what you mean! Thanks for taking time to post on the blog and have a great week.

Gee, Bruce, it ain’t been all that warm and cozy in Central Oregon this year either. Barely warm enough to go swimming until the last 2 days in the Sisters area. Even the quilt show was cut short by a thunderstorm. But we hope the weather gnomes keep trying to warm us up!
Bruce Sussman says
Karen–it’s true. By your standards we’ve come up a little short in the warmth department. It’s been that much worse west of the mountains! The craziest thing is, while we were on vacation in Central Oregon the thunderstorms missed us but hit Portland. I guess that’s just more weather confusion. Have a great week and thanks for writing!
