I’ve heard a lot of whining lately about our unusually wet and cool June weather.
Even our five year old called me this past week with an important question: “Daddy, here’s something funny. Why is it summer and it’s still raining?”
My response was an easy one: “It’s because you live in Oregon!”
A Look Back At A Record Breaking June Heatwave
That’s not always true that our Junes are cold and wet. Although I feel like it usually is. But this graphic tells a different story. Twenty years ago this week, Portland’s highs soared up to 100 degrees.
- June 21, 1992 – Portland hits 96 degrees
- June 22, 1992 – Portland hits 100 degrees
- June 23, 1992 – Portland hits 97 degrees
- June 24, 1992 – Portland hits 96 degrees
All of these numbers are still the record highs to beat for these dates.
Can you imagine the whining during that June heatwave? Maybe you even remember it!

Bruce: It’s certainly true that June can be warm. June 1992 remains the warmest June I’ve ever recorded, though not the driest. (I had a couple of very rainy days here that month). I’m looking forward to July, however.

Sad to say, that was actually twenty years ago.

Marc—thanks for catching me on this one. I changed the post to say 20 years ago. 1992 seems like 10 years ago in my mind, for sure!! Time flies…
