The infamous Portland May Day protests are behind us for another year.
And now, it’s time for the Rose City’s May Miracle!
That could mean a lot of things, of course.Â
In this case it means you should hurry: find your sunscreen, your sunglasses and (if possible) a pair of shorts in your closet that still fit from last year. Here comes the sun and the heat!
Wednesday: The 2-for-1 Weather Special
Wednesday May 3, 2017 will be Portland’s first 70 degree day of the year by perhaps 1pm — and by 4-5pm will likely be Portland’s first 80 degree of the year, as well. It’s a twofer. And hey, who doesn’t love a good bargain?Â
And this helps us avoid another cool weather record. The longest we’ve even waited for our first 70 degree day in Portland is May 5 (that was back in 1967) so we’ll be just under the wire on this one.
Thursday should be even hotter with many of us hitting the mid 80s! However, there is a caveat here: the heat may be enough to trigger isolated showers or thunderstorms. If they get going, they’ll likely dump a lot of water fast and that tends to kick up wind and cool temperatures quickly. Just know there’s a chance of that.
Friday: back to our regular programing, showers and cooler.
Yes, it’s ridiculously late for 70s and 80s, even in Portland
Check these numbers out, which I just looked up.
Portland Spring 2016 Weather Details:
- First 70 degree day: March 30, which is exactly average
- April: 7 days in the 70s, 6 days in the 80s (nearly half the month!)

Portland Spring 2017 Weather Details:
- First 70 degree day: May 3
- April: zero days in the 70s or 80s
- May: ??
So now you have some weather stats to enjoy over a glass of Portland Cider on the first truly warm-slash-hot days of 2017. And remember to work into the conversation, “I’m actually hot outdoors in Portland right now…this is a May Miracle!”
