Whether you like sunny & warm days or not–Portland’s spring of 2012 is already blowing away last year’s weather when it comes to heat!
My colleague Matt Brode actually dug up this little nugget you see in the graphic here. I guess I’d blocked out how bad last spring was.
In a nutshell:
- Portland 2012: The city recorded its third day in the 80s on May 7th
- Portland 2011: The city did NOT have an 80 degree day until June 4
- Portland 2011: The city took until July 2nd to record its third day in the 80s
Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about. And what I will be talking about this coming weekend: Saturday, Sunday (Happy Mother’s Day!) and Monday should all be in the 80s.
So even if the “Rose Festival Low” brings us a cool and wet June this should help tide us over until July 5th!

What was the first day we hit 90 last year? It is gonna be a good year for those sussleberries you grow in your backyard!!
Bruce Sussman says
The first 90 degree last year was…are you ready for this…August 20th! We went all the way to 96 that day because I guess we were trying to make up for lost time.
Thanks for the question–enjoy the heat!
Bruce Sussman says
Last year’s first 90 degree day was in August. We almost made it on May 14th this year–when Portland hit 88. So, we’ll see how long it is before our next round of heat and try to hit it then!

Joan–a lot of northwesterners agree with you. The good news is, cooler weather seems to come back in a few days. Thanks for your very brief comment!
