Our morning and noon Meteorologist, Matt Brode, was on the air breaking news of the Aumsville tornado when my boss called: “Get here as soon as you can. A tornado touched down near Salem.” Now we know the rest of the story: National Weather Service Investigators put the wind speeds at 110-120mph. Oregon’s strongest tornado since 1993. That was 17 years ago! This map shows the storm track.Â
One other really interesting note. Local weather author George Miller points out that Aumsville had a tornado close call in its past. On March 8, 1960 an F-1 tornado touched down near the town. This one was to the east and spared the town from the kind of damage we’ve seen the last couple days.
If you have any questions about northwest tornadoes please post them here and I’ll do my best to answer. It really is a miracle no one was seriously hurt or killed in this storm.
