If your job has you working on the International Space Station, you’ll miss out on some things.
Blackberry milkshakes.
Going for a walk on a warm summer night.
Or taking a trip to the beach.
But you also get to do an experience things almost no one else ever will. And this picture fits in that category!
Astronaut On The ISS Photographs Perseid Meteors
How did I find this photo? I follow Astro_Ron on twitter. Seriously, Astronaut Ron Garan snapped this photo of a Perseid above the earth during the 2011 Perseid Meteors and then tweeted it from space!
But not only did he snap the Perseid Meteor from space. There are bonus items in this picture, too.
- The small but bright dot just up and to the left of the meteor is Mars
- The bright blue glow on the far right comes from noctilucent clouds
- And running from lower left to upper right – in a kind of orange and green band – is airglow
Would you ever want to live in space? Maybe someday you’ll have the chance…

Nice meeting you and your family today Bruce. Hope you enjoyed your day. Looks like your out at the airshow. Family and I are going to head out that way Sunday. Wish the thunderbirds were still there. Have a great weekend.

Ken–great meeting you. It’s fitting that someone who loves weather as much as you do runs a floating restaurant that is impacted every season by river levels–which are driven by weather. We’ll see you again this summer and thanks again!

I would love to come see the weather center. Were you serious about having me there? It would mean a lot to me. As you can understand it is my passion. Email me if so. Thank you for the nice words. You were very friendly and I could see us talking for hours on end about the weather. My wife thought it was very cool that we had the chance to meet. She knows more than anyone how much I love weather(after all I do keep her up at night during the winter every time there is a chance of even a snowflake or windstorm )
