It’s my favorite weather saying: “Ring around the sun or moon, rain is coming soon.”
And it proves to be true an amazing amount of the time.
In this photo you can see that ring around the sun in San Diego above the USS Midway, now a floating museum, docked along the San Diego waterfront.
To photograph this ring around the sun during our spring break trip, I used the ship to block out the sun. That’s the best way to document these.
But what about the weather saying? And did it rain in San Diego after seeing this ring around the sun?
Yes, it did rain. About 24 hours later. Hundreds of miles ahead of an incoming rain system there are often ice crystals in the sky. And we rarely notice them as much more than a high cloud until light passes thru ice crystals lined up just right. That leads to a ‘ring around the sun or moon’ like you see here.
So next time you’re outside and notice one of these rings…better check the forecast because rain may be on the way!
